If Elden Ring adds in new content that includes new death animations as part of a larger work of new content, are people going to hold that same energy or will they choose to employ critical thinking there because their own bias is forcing them to?

If they added additional enemies, new weapons and new environments etc into the game, then why the outrage? Your character dying in new ways, implies that something new is happening to them be it new enemies or new environments etc.Įnemies dying in new ways implies that either the enemies themselves, the weapons disposing of them, or the environment around them is new etc. It feels like people are wilfully ignoring the context around these new animations.

I wouldn't be surprised but it doesn't change the fact that they're selling you something that the game genre is popular for, and to play devil's advocate, it makes a lot of sense that this is a big feature of their Season Pass model. Ofc, the concern may be that they've taken half of the launch-day-ready animations and stuck behind a paywall. Yes, if you're good, you won't see them, but being body-horror it usually makes sense to make the protagonist suffer, and for a video game that has the legacy of "game over" and "lives" it's a very nice touch. In case someone commenting hasn't played Dead Space, you gotta know that they're pretty famous for having a lot of different scenarios for deaths that have completely unique animations. If you got a new Mario game and it said "Season pass with new drowning animations" I would indeed say "what the fuck? That's absurd." But the way DLC mostly works is to say "Here's more of the thing that the game is known for." To at least some of the people here knee-jerking by saying "This is next-level bullshit" apologize if I'm patronizing but I think this makes sense for Dead Space type games.
